Volunteer Coaches

The Heart of Our Club

Balmain & District Football Club is built on the passion, enthusiasm, and commitment of our volunteer coaches.

The positive and rewarding atmosphere that defines our younger age groups exists because volunteers step forward to guide, encourage, and support our players. Your energy on the training field shapes children’s confidence, enjoyment, and love for the game.

Volunteer coaches are not an add-on to our club — they are fundamental to who we are.

Supported Every Step of the Way

As a club, we are committed to supporting our volunteer coaches throughout their journey.

We provide:

  • A dedicated coaches platform on Spond, where weekly coaching tips, session ideas, and club updates are shared
  • Induction days to set clear expectations and provide practical guidance
  • Coaches & Managers information evenings
  • Online meetings and educational webinars
  • Ongoing development opportunities throughout the season
  • The ability to book private meetings with the Technical Director to discuss team challenges, player development questions, or football-specific topics

We believe clear structure, accessible communication, and education create confident coaches — and confident coaches create better environments for players.

You bring the enthusiasm. We provide the framework and support.

Professional Engagement Where It Matters Most

Balmain is proudly a volunteer-driven, community-based football club.

However, there are specific environments within the club where we prioritise paid coaching engagement. We do this intentionally — because in certain programmes, we believe that dedicated professional coaches are best positioned to provide the highest-quality learning environment for players.

Paid coaching roles typically exist in:

  • Structured development programmes
  • High-performance training environments
  • Specialised seasonal programmes

These roles require strong technical knowledge, professional conduct, and the ability to deliver consistent, high-level sessions.

Pathway to Paid Coaching

Many of our paid coaches began as volunteer coaches within the club.

If you are committed, proactive, and aligned with The Balmain Way, there are opportunities to progress.

If you would like to be considered within our future paid coaching ranks, please reach out to the Technical Director with your CV and coaching background.

We value dedication, professionalism, and a growth mindset — and we invest in those who invest in our players.

The Registration
Process

Registrations for Coaches and Managers are done via the PlayFootball Registration Portal, which is the national registration system mandated by Football Australia/Football NSW. Apart from the Football Canterbury standard Code of Conduct, Coaches & Team Managers will also have to read and agree to abide by the BDFC Child Safe Code of Conduct when registering.

There is no cost to register as a Coach or Team Manager.

If you are coaching or managing more than one team, you only need to register ONCE. You will then be allocated to all your teams by your relevant Age Coordinators.

Once you’re ready, please go here to begin a registration: PlayFootball Registration Portal for Balmain DFC.

Guide on how to register: Participant – How to Register as a Coach/Non-Player

The registration packages for Coaches & Team Managers will appear on the portal page with all the other age group packages, so please ensure you scroll down and find the correct package. All Balmain DFC winter registration products begin with the text “BDFC 2026:“.

Football NSW now requires all coaches and managers (aged 18 or more) of teams with any players under the age of 18 to provide a Working With Children (WWC) number prior to your registration being accepted. This change in policy means even parents coaching/managing their own child’s team must have a WWC number.

You’ll need to include your WWC number and upload proof of your WWCC when completing the Coach/Manager registration process.

If you classify for an EXEMPT status (i.e. coach, manage, or otherwise interact only with members who are all over 18), you will still need to indicate this WWC status when registering (Requesting a Working with Children Exemption : playfootball).

What do you need to do?

Applications for a WWC number are made online – start here: Service NSW – Apply for Working With Children check. After applying, you will need to physically visit a Service NSW centre to complete a simple identity check process. It’s critical for Coaches and Managers to apply for their WWC number as early as possible to ensure your registration is finalised prior to the start of the season.

What will the club be doing?

To comply with both the WWC legislation and Football NSW’s child protection policy, Balmain DFC will verify your WWC number once it is entered into PlayFootball, prior to approving your registration as a Coach or Manager.

Please note:

  • It is mandatory for all Coaches and Managers to register in PlayFootball.
  • Teams won’t be included in the Football Canterbury draw unless they have at least one registered Coach or Manager
  • Junior teams will only be granted a training ground allocation when they have an approved, registered coach allocated to their team.

This is an important change, designed to add increased protection for our children.
